What to Wear for Your Photoshoot

One of the most common questions before a session is, “What should I wear?”

The honest answer: you do not need a brand-new wardrobe or perfectly matching outfits to look beautiful in photos. The best outfits are usually the ones that feel like you — just a little more intentional.

At Nenfer Photography, the goal is to create images that feel natural, warm, and honest. So when it comes to what you wear, focus on comfort, confidence, and pieces that let the real connection shine through.

Start with comfort

If you feel uncomfortable in your outfit, it usually shows.

Choose clothing that lets you move, sit, walk, hold your child, play with your dog, or laugh without constantly adjusting yourself. Before your shoot, try your outfit on and move around in it. Sit down, walk around, and lift your arms. If you are constantly fixing something, it may not be the best choice.

Choose soft colors and timeless tones

Soft, neutral, and earthy colors tend to photograph beautifully.

Cream, white, tan, denim, soft blue, muted green, blush, warm brown, and black are all great options. These colors help keep the focus on your face, your connection, and the feeling of the image.

You can absolutely wear color, but I usually recommend avoiding anything overly neon or distracting unless that is truly part of your personality.

Avoid heavy logos and busy patterns

Large logos, bold graphics, and very busy patterns can pull attention away from you.

Simple textures usually photograph better than loud prints. Linen, denim, cotton, knits, soft layers, and flowy fabrics can add interest without overwhelming the photo.

If you love patterns, keep them subtle. Small florals, soft stripes, or gentle prints can work beautifully when balanced with simpler pieces.

Coordinate without matching perfectly

For couples, families, or parent-and-child sessions, everyone does not need to wear the exact same thing.

Instead, choose colors that feel good together.

For example:

Cream, denim, and tan

White, sage green, and soft brown

Black, denim, and beige

Blush, cream, and light blue

The goal is for everyone to look connected without looking identical. Coordinated outfits feel more natural, relaxed, and elevated than everyone matching perfectly.

Think about the location

Your outfit should make sense with where we are shooting.

For a beach session, flowy fabrics, linen, soft colors, sandals, or bare feet can feel beautiful and natural. For a downtown or café-style session, denim, trousers, a dress, or a polished casual outfit may be a better fit. For an in-home session, cozy and comfortable pieces usually photograph really well.

The outfit and location should feel like they belong in the same story.

Bring an extra option

If you are unsure, bring one extra outfit or layer.

A jacket, cardigan, button-down, hat, or second top can give us variety without needing a full outfit change. Sometimes one small change makes the gallery feel more complete.

Do not forget the small details

Small details matter in photos.

Try to steam or de-wrinkle your clothing if possible. Clean your shoes if they will show. Remove hair ties from your wrist. Choose jewelry that feels like you without being too distracting.

Clean, simple nails are also a good idea, especially for close-up moments with children, partners, pets, or hands.

Most importantly, wear something that feels like you

The best outfit is not always the trendiest one.

It is the one that helps you feel relaxed, confident, and present.

These photos are not about creating a fake version of your life. They are about preserving something real — your connection, your personality, your family, and this season you are in.

Wear something that lets you show up as yourself.
