Booking a photography session can feel exciting, but it can also bring up a lot of questions. What happens after you reach out? When is the date officially reserved? Will there be a contract? How does payment work? What happens before the session? When will the gallery be delivered?
If you have found yourself wondering any of these things, you are not alone. One of the most common questions clients ask is, “What happens next?” Every photographer has a slightly different process, so I wanted to create a simple guide that walks you through what working together looks like from beginning to end.
At Nenfer Photography, my goal is to make the experience feel clear, intentional, and supportive from the first conversation to the final gallery. Photography is personal. Whether I am documenting your family, your pet, your relationship, your business, or an intimate event, I want the process to feel as thoughtful as the images themselves.
Step One: Start the Conversation
The process begins when you inquire through my website, email, or social media. You do not need to have every detail figured out before reaching out. You may already know exactly what type of session you want, or you may only have a loose idea of what you are looking for.
Some clients come in with a specific vision, location, and date in mind. Others simply know they want meaningful photos but are not sure where to begin. That first conversation gives us space to talk through what matters most and start building the session from there.
Step Two: We Talk Through the Details
After you reach out, we will either schedule a short planning call or continue the conversation through email or messages, depending on what feels easiest for you. This is where we talk through your needs, your wants, and what you are hoping to accomplish with the session.
We may discuss the type of session you are interested in, who or what will be photographed, your ideal date or timeframe, possible locations, and any moments, people, or details that feel especially important to you. This part of the process is not meant to feel complicated or formal. It is simply a way for us to make sure the session fits what you are looking for.
Every session has its own rhythm, so this conversation helps me understand what matters most and how to best guide the experience.
Step Three: We Choose the Right Setting
The setting of your session is something we will talk through together. Some sessions may take place outdoors, at home, at an event space, or somewhere that already holds meaning for you. If you already have a location in mind, we can talk through whether it makes sense for the session. If you are unsure, I can help suggest options based on the type of session, time of day, lighting, and overall flow.
For events, the location is usually already chosen, but we may still discuss the timeline, lighting, indoor or outdoor spaces, and any moments you want documented.
The goal is not to overcomplicate the location. It is simply to choose a setting that supports the session and helps everything feel natural.
Step Four: A Contract Is Drafted and Sent Over
Once we have discussed the details and confirmed that the session is a good fit, I will draft and send over your contract. The contract will outline the important details of your booking, including the session date, time, location, package, payment terms, retainer, delivery timeframe, rescheduling policies, usage rights, and any other details specific to your session.
This step keeps everything clear and protects both of us. A contract may feel formal, but it is really there to make sure everyone understands what is included, what is expected, and what happens next.
Step Five: Your Retainer Reserves the Date
After the contract is sent over and confirmed, the retainer is collected. The retainer is the payment that officially reserves your date and time on my calendar.
Your booking is not officially secured until the contract is signed and the retainer is paid. Once both are completed, your session is officially confirmed. This means your date is held for you, your session is on the calendar, and we can move forward with the rest of the planning.
Step Six: Your Booking Date Is Secure
Once your contract and retainer are complete, your session date is officially secured. From there, communication will depend on how far away your session is and what type of session we are planning.
If your session is coming up soon, we may stay in closer contact as the date approaches. If your session is booked further out, I will check in periodically so everything still feels clear and cared for. You will not be left wondering if anything else is needed. My goal is to keep the process simple, organized, and supportive so you feel prepared without feeling overwhelmed.
As your session date gets closer, I will reach out to confirm any final details. Depending on the session, this may include the time, location, weather, parking, remaining balance, timeline, or any important details that could affect the shoot.
For outdoor sessions, we may keep an eye on the weather and lighting. Sometimes we may need to adjust the timing slightly or reschedule if the weather is not cooperating. For events, we may review the timeline and any moments you would like documented.
Step Seven: The Session Takes Place
On the day of your session, we will meet at the confirmed location and begin. You do not need to show up knowing exactly what to do. I will help guide the session so you feel supported, while still leaving room for natural moments to unfold.
If you have inspiration poses, meaningful items, or a small prop you would like to include, you are welcome to bring them. This could be something simple like flowers, a special hat, a favorite blanket, your pet’s favorite toy, or anything that adds a personal layer to the session. These details are never required, but sometimes they can add depth and help the images feel even more connected to you.
The flow of the session will depend on what we are photographing. For portraits, couples, families, and pets, I will offer direction, movement, and prompts so the photos feel natural instead of stiff or overly posed. Some images may be lightly posed, some may be candid, and some may happen in the quiet in-between moments.
For events, I will document the day as it unfolds while also capturing the details, people, and moments that matter most.
My approach is intentional, but not overly forced. I want your images to feel honest, warm, and connected — so you can feel present instead of like you have to perform for the camera.
Step Eight: Your Gallery Is Carefully Created
After the session is complete, I begin working on your gallery. This includes reviewing the images, selecting the strongest photos, editing them, and preparing the final gallery for delivery.
The exact delivery timeframe will be outlined in your contract, so you know when to expect your finished images. Every session is different, so the editing process may vary depending on the type of session, the length of coverage, and the number of images included.
I do not send every image taken during the session. Instead, I carefully choose the images that best represent the experience, the emotion, and the overall story of the day. The goal is to deliver a gallery that feels complete, intentional, and true to the moment.
Step Nine: Your Final Gallery Is Delivered
Once your gallery is finished, it will be delivered through an online gallery link. From there, you will be able to view your images, download them, share them, and choose your favorites depending on what is included in your package.n Your gallery is meant to be easy to access and simple to use. These are the images you can hold onto, print, share, and return to over time.
Whether your session was centered around your family, your pet, your relationship, your business, or a meaningful event, the final gallery is where the full experience comes together.
A Session Rooted in Presence
At the heart of every session is the same intention: to create images that feel honest, warm, and connected. The process is there to support that.
The planning, the contract, the check-ins, the session itself, and the final gallery all serve one purpose — to make the experience feel clear enough that you can actually be present for it. Because the best photos often happen when you feel comfortable enough to stop overthinking and simply be in the moment.
You do not need to know exactly what you want before reaching out. You just need a starting point. From there, we can talk through what matters most, what you are hoping to remember, and what kind of session feels right for you.
When you are ready, I would love to help you create something meaningful.
